Located on the south coast of the island of Formentera, this house is the result of a remodel that combined contemporary design and the vernacular style of the island. The house is composed of a series of cubes with thick walls to keep the searing heat out, and flat roofs that were once used for water collection. The architecture, simple and refined, is open to the natural environment and views of the sea.
In hot climates, a sheltered porch or veranda is a must-have architectural feature. This covered space shades a house and catches natural ventilation.
A porch that “works” provides bioclimatic and aesthetic benefits.
Continuous flooring connecting indoor and outdoor spaces can cause problems with rainwater filtering. Weather-stripping doors and a roof over the exterior space will solve this
Limestone floors, plaster finish on the walls and ceiling, white-lacquered medium-density fiberboard (MDF) furniture, and synthetic white quartz panels were used on this house to homogenize the existing structure with the new construction.
Sliding panels were used to partition the space, dividing it into areas with unique functions.
If privacy is not an issue, a washbasin can be placed outside of the bathroom.
