Commissioned by a middle-aged couple, this house is a quiet retreat away from the tumult of its densely populated neighborhood. Despite the limited dimensions of the site, the architect successfully created a spacious interior. The living room, the central space, has the tallest ceiling in the house and is surrounded by the kitchen, dining room, and bedroom.
One of the advantages of built-in furniture is that it is often built along walls, freeing up space to aid order and tidiness.
Different functions of spaces in an open-plan home can be defined by a change in flooring materials or in floor and ceiling heights. Freestanding furniture can also break up a space.
